Dermoscopy

Last January 29, 2017, a dermoscopy workshop was organized by PADSFI at Ace Spa Hotel, Ortigas. The activity was well attended by members, colleagues and dermatology residents. The objective of the workshop was to familiarize the participants on the importance and proper use of the dermatoscope in our everyday practice as dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons.

Dr Jasmin Jamora shared her expertise on basic dermoscopy of melanocytic and non-pigmented tumors and trichoscopy (dermoscopy of hair diseases). Dr Jamora also shared the results of their study on trichoscopy of Alopecia areata among Filipino patients.  Dr Krissy Jamora gave an excellent lecture on the practical applications of dermoscopy in dermatological surgery. She highlighted the importance of dermoscopy in differentiating benign melanocytic lesions from melanoma, assessment of surgical margins and monitoring of recurrence of lesions.  Dr Johannes Dayrit gave a lecture on inflammoscopy (dermoscopy of inflammatory skin diseases) and entomodermoscopy (dermoscopy of infections).  Standardization of terms in dermoscopy and hygienic use of the dermoscope were also highlighted in Dr. Dayrit’s lecture.  A live demonstration on the proper use of the dermatoscope was also conducted in small groups with the help of our members and dermatology residents. Actual cases of basal cell carcinoma, xanthoma, actinic keratosis and nevi were seen.
